Stage 1: The Graveyard

   

You start your adventure by breaking through a gate and then climbing up a flight of stairs and into a graveyard. Bats and ravens pester you as you do this. In the graveyard's opening area, you'll encounter more bats and ravens plus zombies and skeletons. At one point, you'll come across a curious memorial, and the screen will lock in place; after this happens, a number of upside-down crucifix-shaped headstones will appear in succession, directly above you, and attempt to drop on your head. If you survive the onslaught, you'll have to endure a segment in which it's necessary to jump from one elevated pillar top to the next because the floor beneath you suddenly becomes enflamed and thus untraversable; as you platform across the pillars, you have to be sure to avoid the flames that rise up from the in-between spaces. In the area's end portion, tree-possessing wall widows pop out and try to grab you. From there, you proceed to the boss' chamber. When you arrive there, the boss will appear and immediately attack; during the fight, you'll also have to deal with the bats that fly in at regular intervals.

Stage 2: Cave

   

You start this stage on the surface and a place from which you can see Dracula's castle looming in the background. Here you encounter two enemies: bats and skeletons that turn into ghosts when you slay them. You then descend into the cave. As you traverse its opening area, fishmen, bats and falling rocks will try to knock you into the watery gaps below. Eventually you'll drop down into a subterranean lake and necessarily have to jump across moving platforms and do so as bats and fishmen continue to pester you. Then you'll ascend to an upper level and have to deal with a suddenly appearing bat swarm and a skeledragon that guards the room's exit point (the creature's diagonally lying carcass becomes the stairway that you use to escape). What follows is a vertical area through you which ascend by using slain skeledragon carcasses as stairs; you do this while trying to avoid falling rocks. When you emerge from the cave, you head rightward and encounter rock monsters, bats and both regular and bone-throwing skeletons, and then you jump from one tall tree stump to the next while dealing with bats, bone-throwing skeletons and rotating platforms. In the final area, you can choose between an upper or lower path (tree stumps or solid ground); the upper path is generally safer, because it allows you to avoid the rock monsters and skeletons, but the high-jumping fishmen and endlessly spawning bats will still prove to be a problem. The boss will appear at this area's end.

Stage 3: Banquet Room

   

You begin this stage in the castle's main hall and a long horizontal area in which you'll have to contend with axe knights, hunchbacks, ravens and falling chandeliers. In the following hallway, you'll have to jump across a series of falling-and-rising chandeliers and do so while battling spirits and bats that attempt to you knock you into the underlying pit that comprises most of the hall's floor; at the end of this area, you'll encounter more spirits and a pair of harpies, and then you'll proceed to jump atop a falling-and-rising chandelier and ride it up to the hall's exit. As you traverse the next horizontal hallway, you'll have to deal with spirits, rolling eyes, axe knights and falling chandeliers. And then you'll descend down a vertical room that's filled with a potentially overwhelming supply of harpies and rolling eyes. When you reach this room's bottom portion, you head left and find yourself in the boss room.

Stage 4: Basement

   

The basement's opening area is comprised of multiple levels through which you descend by riding atop sinking rock platforms. These passages are filled with mummies, all of which escape from their background-occupying coffins and creep toward you, and bats. At one point, you'll traverse a long horizontal passage that has more of the same plus bone-throwing skeletons and rolling eyes. This passage's sinking rock takes you down another level and into an area in which you have to use moving rock platforms to pass over a watery pit and then battle your way through a passage that contains more of the aforementioned enemies plus hunchbacks. From then on, you do more of the same: traverse enemy-filled passages before using sinking rocks or moving rock platforms to proceed to upper or lower levels. As you near the stage's end portion, you use moving platforms to ride your way up to a final passage, and you do so while contending with bone pillars and bats; the passage in question contains mummies, bats and some spirits.

Stage 5: Clock Tower

   

In the clock tower's opening area, you ride a large elevator upward, and as you ascend, you have to engage with skeletons that fall in from above and bats that spawn in from random locations. At the same time, you have to watch out for solid platforms that appear on the sprite layer; if you make contact with one of them, you'll take damge. When you reach the top, you battle some ghosts, all of which appear from out of nowhere, and then you head right, into the tower's first horizontal passage. This passage is home to axe knights, hunchbacks and ravens, which occupy the platforms that you use to climb upward. These platforms lead up to a passage that contains ghosts, axe knights, hunchbacks and a deadly swinging scythe. From there, you ascend upward twice and traverse similar passages that are filled with all of the aforementioned enemies and obstacles plus regular and bone-throwing skeletons (including the type that turn into ghosts when you slay them). The final passage takes you to the left and over to the boss' chamber.

Stage 6: Vampire's Room

   

This stage is comprised of a very long bridge. As you cross over it, you'll have to contend with several enemy types including bats (those that fly in at regular intervals and those that spawn in suddenly), ravens, spirits, a bone pillar and an axe knight. The other danger is the bridge, itself: Some sections of it will collapse when you step onto them, and you only have a short window of time to cross over them and jump to safety (there are no pit deaths in this game, so the consequences for falling into a pit aren't as severe as they are in the original Haunted Castle; if you fall off the bridge, you'll simply be placed back onto whichever platform you were on before you fell into the pit). At one point, you'll jump down onto one of the bridge's sunken sections, and to escape from it and continue forward, you'll have to kill the nearby skeledragon and use its diagonally lying carcass as a stairway. When you reach the bridge's end, you'll enter into the castle keep and begin the ultimate battle with the Count.
