Lords of Shadow
- Mirror of Fate
|
|
Pan
appears intermittently throughout the game, always serving to further
the plot; he later becomes a boss
|
Pan
is the present in the cut-scene prior to Chapter II, where he takes
from Marie the mirror shard
|
Pan
was an old god whose purpose in current times was to guide the Prophecy's
hero to the "truth." He had connection to the Brotherhood of Light,
with whom he stood when presenting news of the dire prophecy to Gabriel Belmont's
wife, Marie. It was he who showed Marie the amulet--the framed mirror shard
as taken from the Mirror of Fate--that projected to her the vision of Gabriel's
unholy transformation. After the Brotherhood formulated its plan to best choreograph
its role, Pan assisted by masquerading as the "Guardian of the Lake," with
whom Gabriel would eventually seek counsel. Since Pan had advanced knowledge
of Gabriel's tragic destiny, including Zobek's machinations, all he could
do was arrange his own Clock Test, whose correct solution he hoped would begin
clueing Gabriel in, if not
cryptically so, to the chaotic events in which he
was implicated. He thereafter offered to Gabriel his services, showing up
sporadically in animal form to act as quick transport.
Pan intervened several times in Gabriel's affairs, at first urging him to not become possessed by the darkness, which was manifesting itself as dreams whose visions may or may not have been real. He appeared again following Cornell's defeat to warn Gabriel that he had not yet acquired the power necessary to complete his mission, in following transforming into an eagle to transport him to Crow's Pass within the Land of the Vampires, which was the next Lord of Shadow stronghold. When Gabriel grew curious as to Pan's seemingly helpful nature, the old god insisted that he "serves no one," subtly revealing himself as only an actor in a play.
Pan continued his games, eventually revealing to Gabriel that mankind's fate was in his hands without providing full context for his statement. When Gabriel grew tired of the riddles, demanding straight talk, Pan accused him of only pretending to not know the truth. To "enlighten" Gabriel, he transformed into the Silver Warrior, a formidable boss, and removed Gabriel's ability to use magic. After a grueling battle in which the now-limited Gabriel cagily defeated him, Pan explained that their violent encounter was necessary because sacrifices must be made to find redemption--that blood must be spilled in order for the path to be opened, as was God's will. As his final act, he created a split in mountain backdrop, opening for the conflicted Gabriel a path into the Fire Cemetery within the Necromancer's Abyss. Pan had accepted his fate, but would Gabriel his?
