The Lost Soul

Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate
The Lost Soul appears intermittently during the Simon, Trevor and Alucard's respective campaigns

The Lost Soul was fate, itself--the physical manifestation of the Mirror of Fate, which was said to manipulate and control the destinies of those who had access to it. The Lost Soul, too, could influence and manipulate those with whom it made contact, guiding them to their unavoidable destinies while offering them no opportunity to change their fate.

The Lost Soul first appeared to the 25-year-old Trevor Belmont, who was attempting to enter Dracula's castle. It denied him entry, claiming, "You cannot pass yet, Trevor." When he later forced his way into the castle and reached beyond the main hall, the Lost Soul again appeared and explained to him that it knew all; it existed for the purpose of making sure that everything happened that night as it was supposed to happen. Trevor insisted that this shrouded being step aside, rejecting its advice. Though, it continued its spiel, warning Trevor that he would not be able to complete his quest, for his fate had already been sealed; nothing could be done to change it, and his wife and child would suffer from his failure. Trevor at this prognostication angrily drew his whip and struck the Lost Soul in the jaw, shattering the bottom of its mask while robbing it of speech. Realizing that its presence was no longer necessary, the Lost Soul faded away; Trevor stared at the mask's remains, seemingly nonplused yet pondering its owner's words. Later, the now-silent Lost Soul continued assisting fate by providing Trevor a special cube that acted as key to a sealed door in the abandoned mine, which gave way to ceremonial room in which the Daemon Lord was resurrected. It appeared to Trevor one final time after he had been killed by Dracula, hovering over him for a few seconds before disappearing into the Mirror of Fate's glowing light; it was only then that Trevor understood how it had been controlling him.

Thirty years later, when Trevor arose from his slumber in his new vampire form, not remembering his past self, the Lost Soul was there to greet him; it pointed toward the castle's right tower, to a destination whose very structure told the whole story. Too, it revealed Dracula's location and provided "Alucard" the Dark Pain, which he'd use to slay the former Gabriel. Concurrently, the Lost Soul appeared to Simon Belmont and led him into the castle, where they soon came face-to-face. Though Simon had little interest in conversation, the Lost Soul grabbed his attention by illuminating his necklace, which was a framed shard as taken from the Mirror of Fate--an amulet previously owned by his father, Trevor. The fascinated Simon stared into the luminous heirloom, interested in the vision it was projecting. His enthralled gazing was cut short, as the Lost Soul refused to show him any more. Still, Simon had gleaned enough to know that one such image was of the Combat Cross, which once also belonged to his father. When he asked the Lost Soul if the weapon still hid somewhere in the castle, it nodded approvingly but discouragingly. Though, it would not stand in his way.

It appeared intermittently during Simon and Alucard's respective quests, cryptically guiding both toward the castle's heights. While largely stoic, it would at least confirm to Trevor that Simon was indeed his son. The two warriors eventually converged at the castle keep, where they teamed up to vanquish Dracula. As they pondered their victory, the Lost Soul turned up suddenly, holding out its hand. It wanted Simon's amulet, of which it was the rightful owner. After some prodding by Alucard, who explained how it had been manipulating him and would continue to do so, Simon reluctantly handed it over. The Lost Soul took the amulet into its care and returned to the Mirror of Fate, its place of origin.
