Product Description

Castlevania Anniversary Collection is a compilation of eight classic series games: Castlevania (NES), Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (NES), Castlevania: The Adventure (Game Boy), Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (NES), Kid Dracula (Famicom), Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge (Game Boy), Super Castlevania IV (SNES) and Castlevania: Bloodlines (Genesis). This multi-platform digital-only collection was released on May 16th, 2019, for the PS4, the Xbox One, the Nintendo Switch and the PC. Its price is currently set at $19.99. The package includes a bonus ebook titled The History of Castlevania: Book of the Crescent Moon, whose contents include a box art gallery, storyline and control-scheme information for each game, developer interviews, character histories, and scans of design documents. The version-1.1.0 patch added the Japanese versions of these games, save for Dracula II: Noroi no Fuiin (Simon's Quest), which was left out for an unspecified reason (likely because developer M2 couldn't emulate the Famicom Disk System, which would also explain why it went with the Famicom version of Akumajou Dracula instead of the original FDS version); and customizable controls for the games outside of Super Castlevania IV and Bloodlines.

For any of the eight games, pausing the action with the Z2 trigger will bring up a menu that offers six options/tweaks: (1) "Save Replay," which records the action of your current play-through and allows you to re-watch it at any time. (2) "Save," which creates a save-state file that you can restore with (3) "Load"; disappointingly, you can only create a single restore file. (4) "Controls," which brings up a sub-menu detailing the control inputs and nothing more, giving rise to a second disappointment: the complete lack of button-remapping. (5) "Display Settings," which offers six separate visual displays: Original; Pixel Perfect; 16:9; 4:3 with Scanlines; Pixel Perfect with Scanlines; and 16:9 with Scanlines. And (6) "Frame," which allows you to fill the surrounding empty space with one of three backgrounds: Type A (simple black); Type B (which combines Castlevania's box art with an engraved pattern); and Type C (a crimson-colored, fully engraved pattern). From here, you can otherwise reset the game or exit to the title screen.
