Marvel vs. Capcom

Around 1996, Capcom made a game called X-Men vs. Street Fighter. The game featured Capcom's famous Street Fighter crew vs. Marvel Comic's X-Men bunch. Following up on its success, Capcom combined X-Men vs. Street Fighter and its other fighting game, Marvel Super Heroes, and created Street Fighter vs. Marvel Super Heroes. The next step up was natural, as Capcom used more than just its Street Fighter characters; using all the characters from their gaming universe, they created Marvel vs. Capcom.

One of the main selling points of the game was, of course, Mega Man (prominently featured with Spider-Man on the game's ads).

Mega Man only played a small role in the game, but he was a welcome addition to Capcom's array of fighting games. Roll came for the ride, too, as she was a hidden character.

The concept was a lot like all of Capcom's fighting games: Fight your way past all of the other game's characters and confront the boss—in this case, Onslaught. However, none of the regular Mega Man bosses were included in the game, though Dr. Wily could be seen in the background of one of the fighting stages.

Mega Man certainly wasn't one of the stronger characters—sounding more like a child—but he kept most of his abilities from the Mega Man series. His moves are as follows:

  • Semicircle forward plus medium punch: Mega Uppercut;
  • Hold down the heavy punch button: Charged-up Mega-buster blast;
  • Semicircle forward plus medium or heavy kick: Attack with current item;
  • Semicircle back plus weak, medium or heavy kick: Item change (flip top teleports in and gives Mega Man either a Mega Ball, Leaf Shield, or Tornado Hold, depending on which button is hit).

He only uses 3 items from the Mega Man series, and they all work the same way they did in those games. Like the other characters, he also has hyper combos. They are:

  • Semicircle forward plus medium and heavy punch together: Hyper Mega Man—Mega Man transforms into a huge Mega-Man-X like formation, launching all kinds of missiles and projectiles forward;
  • Semicircle forward plus medium and heavy kick together: Rush Drill—rush forms into a machine with a drill in front. Mega Man can ram opponents until the time is up;
  • Semicircle back plus two kick buttons and any other button at once: Beat Plane—Mega Man rides in Beat, dropping projectiles on foes.

As for endings, he and Roll had one each. They are:

  • Mega Man- After defeating Onslaught, Mega Man is shown gaining a new power from his defeated foe, complemented by familiar Mega Man music.
  • Roll- Roll contacts Dr. Light, rejoicing in the fact that she took out Onslaught before Mega Man could. Pleased, Dr. Light upgrades her armor and sends her on her next mission. After she leaves, Mega Man shows up to find out what Roll had done. Seeing that this time he didn't get to be the hero, he sheds tears.
