Vampire Killers ![]()
One of the most famous families of video game legend, the Belmont clan has repeatedly saved the world from the tyrannical Dracula and his forces of evil. Along the way, though, some Belmonts received assistance from a friend or two. Needless to say, all of the below have their own personal agendas. The Belmonts always utilize the famous family whip while the others brandish their own tools of destruction. All of them, however, can use mystic and special weapons; these and their striking weapons will be discussed below the character. Now prepare for this four-page look at the heroes of Castlevania.

Leon is cast as the first Belmont to encounter the evil of the night in Lament of Innocence, the third 3D Castlevania offering and its first appearance on the PS2. Leon begins with the Whip of Alchemy, which will eventually become the more powerful Vampire Killer after a story sequence initiated by the defeat of the first five guardians; he can also find three elemental whips--ice, fire and lightning--to exploit enemy weaknesses in different ways. With any whip, he can pull off strings of deadly combo attacks. Leon has other special abilities: He can double jump, absorb enemy attacks as magic power, and learn all types of new skills, like jump kicks and guard dodges. He'll, of course, find the sub-weapons that will be passed on into the family; they are:

Leon eventually destroyed the now-vulernable Walter only to find that Mathias was behind the whole ordeal, having used all parties involved in a genius plot; that is, Walter would die through Leon's vengeful actions, his vampire soul would be extracted, and Death would channel it into the dying Mathias using the Crimson Stone, thus granting him new life and crowning him Lord of the Vampires. Leon resisted the disappointed Mathias' plea to join together in this unholy afterlife, where they would curse God and bear their vengeance, and would thereafter never again see his friend. However, in removing Death as a threat, he told the dark angel to deliver to his new master a message: "From this point forward," he said, "the Belmont Clan would hunt the night!" As the earliest noted Belmont, Leon gave us a dose of just how powerful this family would become. Leon, in part, created the Vampire Killer whip using the Whip of Alchemy received from Rinaldo--it was truly a divine killing machine born of Leon's hatred combined with the generous soul and will of Sara. It was also during his quest where he located five weapon types that had been dropped by previous hunters who had failed in Walter's game; he mastered in their use by collecting seven orbs that allowed him to temper them with mystic power, thus creating four of the basic family weapons and the exclusive crystal. It was these weapons that were passed on into the family for centuries, eventually to be used in the family's never-ending war against Mathias, who renamed himself Vlad Tepes Dracula. |

Games In and Weapons Used
Sonia's one and only appearance was in Castlevania Legends for the original Game Boy. Hers was the fairly typical Belmont arsenal of the whip and sub-weapons. Sonia starts out with a standard leather whip. She can use magic crystals to power it up twice; the first one turns it into a short chain whip, and a second will increase its length and turn it into a fireball whip--a long chain whip capable of spewing fireballs. Rather than using the dagger, holy water, boomerang, axe and stopwatch, Sonia relied on five soul powers that could be collected and interchanged during her adventures. They are the following:

When Sonia came of age, her uncle passed unto her the Vampire Killer whip that Leon once brandished. Too, it was Sonia who reclaimed the mystic weapons that her ancestors presumably hid for her to find near what was once Walter Bernhard's castle, for these weapons would be forged further over time for each new generation's own usage. Whether or not the stopwatch was part of the package by that point is unsure, but Sonia made it so in place of the lost crystal. Even though, to her, these sub-weapons were only collectible (as she wasn't yet trained to use them), she was not without alternate power: She would instead use her own sacred power to steal and harness a soul's essence and thus use it as a weapon against Dracula's forces. She also started the trend of finding symbol attachments (chains and fireballs) that would magically augment the basic leather whip, allowing for a metamorphosis--a deadly alteration transforming it into a now-more-powerful tool of destruction. Sonia had another magical power that allowed for temporary invincibility, but this was either character-specific or an ability somehow harnessed and bottled as a special potion for future use. |

Games In and Weapons Used
Trevor has only one game to his credit: Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse. After Sonia, his became the more typical arsenal that the future Belmonts would employ. Trevor starts with his regular short-length leather whip. Rather than crystals, Trevor can collect "mystic whip" symbols (pre-"morning star" symbols) to change the leather whip into a chain whip. A second symbol will allow the whip to reach its potential: It'll transform a chain whip into a morning star whip. On the flip side, Trevor mastered the five mystic weapons that Sonia had collected during her journeys. They are the following:

Axe

Dagger

Holy

Trevor in Castlevania: Curse of Darkness makes a second appearance in a more unconventional role--that of a supporting cast member who becomes a playable character within a secret mode. Though, his mission is inconsequential and purely for fun. He starts the mission with the Vampire Killer whip, which he can enhance by finding extensions and special skins. With any whip form, he can pull off strings of deadly combo attacks. He will also call upon two other abilities: He can double jump and guard dodge. More useful is that Trevor at all times has at his command the usual five sub-weapons; each can be enhanced via a "crash" effect that drains larger-than-normal heart totals.

Character's History

Though there would always exist resistance, Trevor's victory over Dracula went a long way in earning the respect and acceptance of those who wished to see the Belmont's banishment. Furthermore, Trevor forged positive relationships with each ally, whose descendants would grow alongside the family of legend. He and Grant became great friends and together started Warakiya's rebuilding process; his relationship with Sypha only served to further evolve the family's bloodline; and Alucard's burden had surely touched him. As Dracula was growing stronger with each rising, so, too, were the Belmonts and their allies.

Grant Danasty was one of the ally characters in Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse. Grant uses his small stabbing dagger to speedily stab forward. It's a rather weak weapon, and it can't be powered up by any means, but his other abilities more than make up for it. (In the Japanese version of this game, Grant uses a regular throwing dagger as his normal striking weapon, which eliminates it as a sub-weapon.) Along with the stabbing dagger, Grant also has a fondness for other sharp weaponry; he can wield two such mystic weapons and the stopwatch:

The grateful Grant, now alone in the world, offered to help Trevor by using his unique skills and fighting abilities: Grant was very quick and agile, could climb across walls and ceilings for better access, and he could use his small frame to squeeze between tight spaces. Strength-wise, Grant's stabbing dagger didn't bring much to the table, but his propensity to attack with axes and daggers from almost any angle made him a valuable ally. After the victory over the Count, the two allies became great friends, and they led the way in the rebuilding of their home town and all of Warakiya. |

Sypha Belnades was another of the ally characters in Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse. As a magic-user, Syhpa commands the Warakiya staff, which she uses to both attack enemies and execute her magic spells. As an attacking weapon, the staff is rather quick but very weak; it cannot be powered up, either. You'll want to take Sypha along for one reason: Her three powerful spells, which act as sub-weapons. Add in the stopwatch, and they amount to the following:

Character's History

Since Sypha was frail in nature, her magical staff was hardly a good weapon for use in combat. Instead, she used this powerful device to cover for her weaknesses by utilizing devastating magical spells, which she used to a great degree in the destruction of Dracula's most trusted guardians. After the victory, she settled in with Trevor as her companion; she had finally found happiness, and she would more importantly help in continuing the evolution of the Belmont chromosomes. The Belnades family, too, would grow alongside its new friends and would like the Belmonts become ally to the Church. While not many of its members actually fought directly against Dracula, it was in future Belmont warriors where traces of her genes could be seen. (Hers definitely spawned the future "Spell Fusion" system, which the family would later harness as a more simple item-crashing ability.) |

Alucard

Games In and Weapons Used
In storyline, Alucard first made his mark in Castlevania Legends as a supporting cast member. Alucard's first playable appearance was instead his earlier gaming debut as the third of the helping spirits in Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse. Rather than using conventional weapons, Alucard preferred to use his natural abilities, which mimicked that of his father, Count Dracula. Alucard can initially fire out a single weak fireball (ball of destruction) at a short length. He can collect Trevor's "mystic whip" symbols to increase the strength and range of the attack--the first to shoot two fireballs out at reverse polarity, and the second to shoot three fireballs in a spreadshot. He lacks in the sub-weapon category, however, as he can only use one of the typical mystic weapons:
|

Alucard made his second playable appearance as the main hero of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. At his most basic, Alucard can use his fists to fight off enemies. In reality, Alucard will use hundreds of weapons, armors and spells. I won't even attempt to list them here, so I suggest you instead try Symphony's weapons page for that information. However, Alucard does use most of the Belmont-exclusive mystic sub-weapons, in the usual manner. These are listed below:

Alucard returns to battle in Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, where in addition to his supporting-cast appearance, he takes to the action as an unlockable secret character. This version of Alucard is ripped directly out of Symphony of the Night, but his arsenal is instead controlled. That is, Alucard brandishes only with the Alucard Sword and a few familiar fighting moves; additionally, he has at his command two sub-weapons that afford him expected magical powers:

Character's History
|
As the son of the world's greatest evil, Alucard's entire existence is one of pain, inner struggle and insecurity. While it would be logical to think that through his actions that his would be the same thirst for revenge, Alucard's nature is as gentle as the mother he had barely known; her genes would prove to be dominant in that regard. On her behest, Alucard held no disdain for the humans for what they did to his mother, and Dracula could never understand why. This rift became too great for father and son to coexist, and Alucard thus became the estranged and forgotten son. Thereby, Alucard believed it his life's mission to vanquish Dracula from this world. He certainly had the propensity: Because of the ever-present vampire blood, Alucard could shapeshift and utilize magical abilities similar to those of his father. Over time, he also became proficient in the use of magic spells, fireball attacks, relics, and he could always call upon and showcase the sword-wielding and striking-weapon skills he had picked up as a youth. Once Dracula (or at least his spirit) was sealed away for good thanks to the efforts of Julius Belmonts and the Hakuba Shrine priests, Alucard made it his personal mission to see to it that no one ever try to inherit that power. Under the guise of "Genya Arikado," he joined a top-secret Japanese agency and from this position investigated any attempts by the underground to create a new Dark Lord. These exploits are detailed here. In Action: Dracula's Curse | Symphony |
