I'm getting conflicting accounts from my sources. Sometimes it seems like Metroid came first, sometimes like Kid Icarus preceded Metroid. Which was developed/released first? Or is it a matter of one being developed first, but released last?

I ask this because they're both by the same team and in reviewing the two I'd like to know which one they worked on first, as that has a big impact on which title took after which. I know Nintendo Research & Development 1 worked on quite a few games, but I think Metroid and Kid Icarus are too similar to not compare and contrast.

Thanks in advance!

I know that in the U.S. Metroid debuted in 1986, and Kid Icarus in 1987.

That helps. I fear it might be a case of the games being released in a different order as with Castlevania and Vampire Killer. Wikipedia lists Metroid as being released in Japan on August 1986 and Kid Icarus December 1986, so that's the same order as its US release. But Wikipedia says this:
Wikipedia wrote:
After Mario Bros, Yokoi worked with Miyamoto on several different games, including Ice Climber and Kid Icarus. He later produced another game titled Metroid

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunpei_Yokoi

I know, I know. It's Wikipedia, but I just want to make sure.

Though in a list of games produced by Gunpei Yokoi, Metroid is listed as being produced before Kid Icarus:

So I guess it might be a blonde moment Wikipedia's having. For some reason the Japanese release dates seem to be rather hard to find.

It's also conceivable that they were co-developed simultaneously.

Yeah, that's a good point. Ah well, I'll just say they were developed by the same company around the same time and not bother with the order.

http://www.metroid-database.com/m1/fds-interview-p0.php

I just found this interview with the makers of both Metroid and Kid Icarus translated at the Metroid Database, and the following response stuck out:
Quote:
[Yoshio] Sakamoto: At that time, Metroid was finished and since immediately afterward we entered into development on Icarus, we were very irritated.

So Kid Icarus was developed right after Metroid. Glad I know now.
