Some key points:

1) The Metroidvania exploration/RPG format will stay intact, somehow.

2) A trailer and narrated walkthrough are on their way.

3) Release date is to be June 10th.

Yeah. It definitely sounds like they're doing something to shake up the formula. The route they're taking is about the last thing anyone else would've thought of - that's means this game will be either hit or miss.

You have to own every electronic device in existence to keep up with the series. They should make a game about that.

I don't have the option to merge threads (I think), so let's just make this "The Official Encore of the Night" thread.

I'd make the other one the official thread, but it's too much work to scroll down that far.

Sorry about the double thread! I have no idea how that happened..

It is really hard to keep up with the series. I don't know if they're trying to reach new audiences or what. I'm strictly a Nintendo handheld person, though we also have a Wii, and so I've missed out on the Dracula X Chronicles, Order of Shadows, the two Sorrow cell phone versions, and if the information's correct Harmony of Despair will be added to that list as well.

They answer your inquiry in the blog:

Oh and about the sprites, many of them have been updated by our in-house artist, Emily Steigerwald. With only one artist, we couldn't possibly update them all, but I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised with what we were able to accomplish.

I was expecting traditional castle-crawling mechanics. This looks to have a non-interactive map used purely as a backdrop.

Is that enough to meet the "Metroidvania" criteria?

I'm not exactly sure if it is. That's what they keep saying - y'know, that it's more than just a simple puzzle game and that it'll have exploration and depth. The trailer really makes it look like the map is behind all the action.
