Ring Of Honor sure knows how to promote an alternative to WWE.

Quote:
It’s hype week for one of the most anticipated events in the rich history of Ring Of Honor as New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s elite take on ROH’s best of the best live on iPPV tomorrow night at 7:30 in New York City as ROH presents WAR OF THE WOLRDS.

Is WAR OF THE WOLRDS a yearly event or just a one-off dela?

A wrestling promotion that can't even spell? It's pathetic.

Now if you'll pardon me, I'm going to get back to the WWE Network and the exciting old adventures of China, Nails, K-Quick, the Smoking Guns, the Nasty Boys, Psycho Sid, Jackal, Scotty Too Hotty, Rhino, and Crime Time, as they wrestle on some of those great PPV events like Experience, Bad Blood and Insurrection.

I also think that the indies have taken a pretty big hit in the last 3 years or so. WWE has poached a lot of the stand-out talents and I just don't sense that there is much enthusiasm for the ROHs, Chikaras, PWGs like there seemed to be 3 or 4 years ago.

I think another reason the indies have lost a bit of oomph is because part of the enthusiasm for those feds was that they showcased guys that fans thought WWE would never ever push, so there was a little rebellion against the WWE going on. Then WWE pushed CM Punk and Daniel Bryan big time, and now it sort of looks like, well if this guy hasn't made it in the WWE maybe he really doesn't have "it", it's not because WWE are assholes who just don't push certain types of guys for no reason (though for the most part they still are).

This is a good point.

I think things like Botchamania have also (unintentionally) caused this "LOL indy wrestling" attitude, where fans poke fun at the production level of indies and the fact that guys aren't "there yet". This attitude with certain fans has always bothered me. Sure, Sabu has botched more moves than Randy Orton. But Sabu has taken more risks than Orton ever has. The risk factor on doing a chinlock, DDTing a guy and hitting a Diamond Cutter is a lot different than the risk factor involved with running, jumping onto a chair, leaping to the top rope and then flipping onto a guy laying on a table.

Smart fans used to scoff at WWE and support the alternatives. Now smart fans point out how well-done WWE stuff is, and pick apart how green indy/TNA guys are and how the production is bush-league.

Catching up with the last few months of TNA and it's pretty good. It's good for pretty much the same reasons that NXT is right now. Characters have feuds and fight for title shots. The women and tag divisions have focus and depth. The shows have a very logical progression: Taryn Terrell wins a #1 contender match, the next week she battles Gail Kim for the title, a new woman debuts and attacks them, setting up a new challenger. There's no John Cena to run out in the middle of two wrestlers feuding, demanding matches that make no sense other than "John Cena's still alive, so he's main eventing regardless".

TNA has been running shows in the Manhattan Center and the atmosphere there, not unlike NXT's small Full Sail crowd, is a lot more fun than RAW's stale arena shows. It feels like the fans and wrestlers have a good give-and-take, compared to RAW's antagonistic us vs. them "Fuck this, we'll cheer for Damien Sandow and we'll let you know when we feel like making Roman Reigns a big deal" relationship. When Taryn Terrell and Gail Kim have a great match and take horrendous neckbreaker bumps on steel steps, the crowd appreciates it and chants "BETTER THAN DIVAS!". When Ethan Carter starts bragging about how awesome he is, the crowd plays along with "YOU CAN'T WRESTLE" chants and when Carter calls himself "the greatest wrestler alive!", the TNA crowd chants "C M PUNK!" to which Carter responds: "I'd love to beat HIM, too!"

There doesn't feel like any wasted segments on NXT or Impact. Every segment has a purpose. There are no comedy little people matches, embarrassingly awful Adam Rose segments or pointless Jack Swagger matches. Every match on NXT is getting someone over, whether it's Charlotte, Bull Dempsey or Baron Corbin. Every match on TNA is presented as something of a big deal. The tag title matches, #1 contender matches and Knockout title matches had PPV quality build-ups.

I guess what I'm trying to say here is that RAW - aside from Dean Ambrose liking hot dogs and Stardust - just really sucks.

Some recent matches worth going out of your way to find on the internets, if you have some free time:

Samoa Joe vs. Austin Aries
Low Ki vs. MVP
Austin Aries vs. Knux
all the matches in the Hardys/Wolves/Team 3D series

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that Bully Ray is kind of a dick, but I do find it disrespectful that, on his way out of a company that made him a pillar, and gave him main event runs and a "Hall of Fame" honor, he basically buries the company's current/future top team and sets up a program with a team working for another company on a TNA PPV.

Lucha Underground's "Grave Consequences Match" (a.k.a. "Our Version of a Casket Match") between Mil Muertes and Fenix is the 2015 Match of the Year.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Icvizxc3UB0&list=PLszDUngAaPFaS1RjnDnabQnGXIgFdZk4V&index=1

(At least until Daniel Bryan, Dolph Ziggler and Dean Ambrose injure themselves falling off of things at Wrestlemania in a vain attempt to prove they deserve better than being in six-man tags with Stardust and R-Truth.)

Perro Aguayo Jr's freakish in-ring death teaches us a lesson we should have already learned with Gwen Stacy: do NOT get a neck injury anywhere near Spider-Man.

Just proves the WWE is better...Rey Mysterio goes back to Mexico and he has become so used to the amazing competition and physical specimens over the last 15 years that merely performing his WWE finishing move in the way he has been accustomed to actually kills a man.

To paraphrase Triple H, I think Aguayo must have had a neck like a stack of dimes.

Morbid curiosity got the best of me and I watched that clip. It looks like Aguayo was out of position and he took that head-scissor really awkwardly. Maybe he was concussed or a little out of it before that. Such a fluke thing.

There is some bizarre irony in that the "619" is always criticized as being this silly, contrived-looking move. And here was a guy falling into position for the 619 and people couldn't tell if he was selling or tragically, fatally injured.

Either way, he was done for. Not even Dr. Konnan's vigorous "nudging and shaking" technique, nor being (eventually) rushed to the dressing room on a nearby wooden plank was able to save him.

Quote:
Since Lucha Underground has a lot of AAA talent, the vast majority of them knew Aguayo Jr. personally. They had an in-ring ceremony at yesterday's tapings and Sexy Star and Fenix were crying very hard. Fenix couldn't even stand and Konnan could barely talk. Almost everyone was crying in the building. There were a lot of Aguayo signs brought to the show but fans were asked not to hold them up because the shows taped last night and won't air for more than two months.

That last sentence made me do a double take.

I'm struggling to understand how they phrased that to the crowd.

"His death will be old news in 2 months. Also, he never wrestled here, so uh..... don't hold those signs up, guys. Thanks."

Dave Meltzum on the death of Tommy Rogers of the Fantastics:

Quote:
"His roommate woke up at about 3 a.m., found him in a chair, slumped over and gurgling, in front of his computer."

Hell, I'm doing that right now.

I just pray that when my time comes, I also get to go out while doing what I love most: making gurgling sounds while downloading M2M hippo porn.

I was listening to one of the standup comedy channels on Sirius Radio, and they played a minute-long clip from that great comedian, It Ended Too Quickly for Me to Find Out His Name. That guy's good.

Anyway, he was talking about the Hulk Hogan sex tape, possibly because just saying "the Hulk Hogan sex tape" is a guaranteed laugh. He said his favorite part of the Hulk Hogan sex tape is when Hulk is seen struggling for about a minute to open the condom. The punchline: "I bet he wishes they made condom wrappers out of yellow T-shirts."

It's a Mike Lawrence bit. He did it on Conan semi-recently. He's mentioned being a wrestling fan on a podcast here or there, as well.

Can anyone explain what the hell is going on with TNA/Global Force Wrestling?

Shane McMahon's showing up any day now to declare he's bought both companies, right?

I thought Shane-O Mac was off on the windswept tundras of Asia, making his own name in the business world with nothing but his own drive, grit, hard work and an $80 million cushion.

The Observant One, Dave Mültzler, on Ronda Rousey's book returning to the New York Times Best Seller list:
"It's very unusual for a book to have its run, drop off the list, and then come back to a top 20 spot weeks later, but that really shouldn't be a surprise."

Meltzer's point is excellent, other than making no sense. This is precisely the way the Best Seller list works, or doesn't. You can take it from me: it's hard to say.

Dave Meltzer Needs to Buy a Nice World Atlas, Chapter I:

"Thanks to draws like Carpentier, [Montreal's] Delormier Stadium ranks second, behind only New York City's Madison Square Garden, for the number of times a venue has held the biggest wrestling crowd of any year in North America.

On a worldwide level the stadium is fourth, behind Madison Square Garden, the Tokyo Dome and Chicago's Comiskey Park."

The Comiskey Reservation is considered tribal land and not a part of the United States.

Dave Meltzer is Easily Entertained, Vol. XIX:

"The New Day was out next... Then they made fun of the Usos. "When we say Us, you say Ow, Us Ow," while Big E grabbed his shoulder. That was hilarious."

Dave Meltzer is Funnier Than Things Considered Hilariously Funny By Dave Meltzer, Vol. VIII:

"Awkward ring announcer time. Dasha Fuentes, the ring announcer, had to announce the winners as "It's Bayley & the Hype Bros." ... It's Bayley was running around looking for [Alexa] Bliss. She found her doing a photo shoot. Bliss dropped the b-word and ran away. It's Bayley picked up the b-word, turned around and had a faceoff with [Nia] Jax. This allowed Bliss to hit It's Bayley from behind. Jax grabbed Its' belt."

Cody Rhodes is already working on his checklist.

He's already booked a match against TNA star "The Miracle" Michael Bennett August 26, for NEW (Northeast Wrestling). So I guess he doesn't have to go to TNA to cross that one off of the list.

He's also booked to face Kurt Angle, also for NEW on August 27. That show also has Jushin Liger vs. Jeff Hardy.

How the hell is this little northeast indy getting matches/stars this big? TNA and ROH aren't booking matches this big, at least as far as starpower goes.

After all of the rave reviews and watching these clips

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-lBy2o8HQM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcX61ERPbY8

and of course, this tweet from @theduelies:

"Liger just pretty much did the penis plex spot but with his ass and with nine other guys behind him. Serious."

I ordered all 3 nights of PWG's 2016 Battle of Los Angeles.

(Pee-Wee Herman voice) What's the significance?!

These are the first wrestling DVDs I have ever - ehhhh-ehhh-EHHHHHH-VER purchased.

Believe it or not, but TNA's show this week was my favorite show of this week. I'm counting NXT, the two main roster shows (RAW had a great Zayn/Rollins match but another 2 hours of blah to sit through as usual) and the weekly New Japan show.

The Rosemary-Jade "Monster's Ball" match was more of a collection of a few freaky spots than a match, but I guess this old Mick Foley fan still loves someone willing to take a few crazy bumps to make a name for themselves. Rosemary went Full Foley here; taking a German suplex into thumbtacks; an STO onto a barbed wire board and a Lionsault with the barbed wire board on top of her. SICK

Eddie Edwards vs. Bobby Lashley in a 30 minute Ironman Match was very, very good and had a finish that made sense. Someone was locked in a painful submission and they rode it out until the clock expired instead of tapping out with 3 seconds left like an idiot! The typical finisher trade-offs and near-falls were in here, but there were also some real genuine surprise highlights and some good booking: Lashley BOUNCING Edwards off the ramp with a powerbomb to get a count-out fall; Edwards landing on his feet on a German suplex attempt on the ramp and hitting his running knee; Lashley cheering and trying to run out the clock but then having a spinebuster countered with a guillotine choke to almost tie it up. Genuinely good stuff.

Keep it up, TN-er, Impact Wr-uh I mean Anthem Wrestli--Owl City Wrestling or whatever fuck it's called.

This week's Impact had Scott Steiner skyping Joseph Park and Jeremy Borash and scaring them by screaming "YOU'RE A LAWYER WITH A FAT ASS". SO BE THE FAULT, this was the best Impact in about 6 months and easily better than either Raw or Smackdown.

Cody Rhodes won the ROH World title, and though ostensibly booked as a heel, he had the crowd totally on his side.

Wrestling is an odd business.

It's too bad there are no more weekly GX Raw episodes, because I think CNN Head Guy would have made a formidable champion:

Considering the desperate, graceless way they're always trying to shoehorn the lamest topical references into the announcers' mouths, someone needs to be fired if they don't make a CNN logo box and stick it over Curtis Axel's head tonight.

Dave Meltzum's Spelling Error of the Week (No. 1 in a series of 1):

"[Ron Starr] had been working different territories, eeking out a living."

The only person I know who ever eeked out a living was Fay Wray.
