Just curious as to people's taste. This was originally going to be "Your favorite Castlevania game." but you know how that would end.

Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance
Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge

Surprised?

CastleVania: The New Generation (yes! Euro version title fits better, nope?; plus, the greatest 3D FX battles in 2D, effing SOTN included)

CastleVania II: Simon's Quest (for the only TRUE sense of free exploration [i.e., more than stupid ability-collectoing+backtracking orgies] in the whole effing series! damn you, iga!)

...and, my one and only #1, which I had no problems to decide on if I could name only one game:

Cv 64 special edition: for its REAL sense of creeping adventure, for its TOUGH final boss, for its GREAT story strands (fuck you, Symphony freak kiddies, you suck), for its actual VAMPIRES, for its BELIEVABLE side-characters, for its sense of an actual world you play in. Even without enerving item collecting.
I one word: For the Villa. I don't mind not being able to backtrack, and all graphics get outdated. Oops.

My opinions on this always seem to sway around whichever I'm enjoying most at the time. At any rate:

VS Castlevania
Akumajo Dracula X: Chi no Rondo (original, played on a real Duo)
Castlevania: Portrait of RUin

1) Castlevania 3
2) Rondo of Blood (thanks to DXC for pushing this back into my top 3 for now)
3) Castlevania 1, where it all began

In my top 5 is DracXX SNES as well, misunderstood game that always got blamed for being a Rondo remake when in fact it's sort of a sequel. The #1 game on my top CV's list always remains there for to me, it's the most enjoyable of the series, and an inspiration for Rondo itself.

1. Symphony of the Night (possibly the last great sprite based game - it did everything you wanted sprites to do when you were a kid and had ridiculous replay value)
2. Lament of Innocence (did what other Castlevania's couldn't do: Took SotN and made it into a great 3-D platformer)
3. Castlevania 3 (really expanded the franchise & at the time this game really pushed the graphics envelope as far as animation and on screen color).

My favorites fluctuate over time, and I haven’t played every Castlevania game released, so my opinion isn’t all-encompassing, but, that said, right now, I’d go with:

#1 Symphony of The Night
#2 Harmony of Dissonance
#3 Super Castlevania IV

WHAAT?? You like Castlevania 64?? So do I!

Oddly, I found the game more enjoyable than some people, but even then I wouldn't say it's my favorite. I never really got to play any of the classic Castlevanias back when they were released so nostalgia is a little absent from my choices:

- Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
- Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow:
- Castlevania: Symphony of The Night

Of course I love most of the rest but these are at the top of my list.

Castlevania 64 was a good game. It has what the PS2 games lack... Platforming.

^ Yup. The first level was perhaps the most tiring though since it mostly consisted of running around the maze-like level layout and finding switches to open different gates until you eventually got to the boss. It improved dramatically from there thankfully.

1. SOTN
2. Harmony of Dissonance
3. Portrait of Ruin

Note: I have never payed Circle of the Moon, CV: 64 or its sequel, or the first DS game, Dawn of Sorrow, so I can't comment on those.....

For me are...

1) Castlevania III Dracula Curse ( I expected a remake)
2) Castlevania Rondo of Blood(Chi no Rondo for the PC-engine)
3) Castlevania Nocturne in the Moonlight (for the satrun version)

The Portrait of Ruin was no new in the basic style, the change exist since the CV III... Be careful all and see later...

Super Castlevania IV - The quintessential old-school platformer Castlevania
Symphony of the Night - The quintessential Metroidvania Castlevania
Circle of the Moon - My first Castlevania

I have yet to play Castlevania III, Rondo of Blood and Belmont's Revenge.

1- THE BEST CASTLEVANIA EVER for me is the first one, the escenarios, the music, the graphics(Astonishing for 1986)...

2-CASTLEVANIA RONDO OF BLOOD, almost the best castlevania ever, if you never played before¿What are you doing here? The voice acting is incredible, thousand times better than the horrible voices we heard in SOTN

Here the link for the windows/mac version

http://www.ziddu.com/download/5651256/Rondo_of_Blood_Win32.rar.html

Password: chapapa

3-This one is kinda difficult for me, because Circle of the Moon was one of the best games I ever played, and bloodlines is incredible too... but this place goes for Castlevania 3 , because it continued the legacy of the fist one

Rondo of Blood just wasn't released conveniently over here until the PSP version, and even then that's not very convenient for me since I don't want to buy a PSP just for one game. I'm not, you know, nuts - like some people. (I kid, guys, I kid!)

To be fair, I HAVE played Castlevania III via the Konami Castlevania/Contra set, so I'm not a total phony. Being of the younger generation of Castlevania fans, I'm lucky to have had the pleasure of playing the original on the NES. And get this. At SCHOOL. Many fun days of me and the guys playing Castlevania and Mega Man 6 for Reward Time (RT).
